A PLAN to build a new £3m supermarket in an east Cleveland village could create up to 30 jobs according to retailer Aldi.

The super store chain has unveiled proposals for a new outlet on green land opposite Pheasant Fields Lane, in Skelton.

A public exhibtion is to be held next month for the people to find out more about the company’s plans.

An Aldi spokesman said: “We are excited about the prospect of delivering a new Aldi store to Skelton as we are keen to offer the local community additional choice when completing their shopping.

“We would like to encourage the local community to come along and find out more about our proposals and meet the project team.”

The company said the 15,995sq ft store would also create additional jobs during construction.

The spokesman added: “The site forms part of a wider site that is being promoted for mixed-use development through the emerging Redcar and Cleveland local plan.

“The proposed store has been carefully designed to ensure it sits comfortably within the site and positively contributes to the appearance of the surrounding area.”

If the store was to go ahead, it would be the second major supermarket to open in Skelton in recent years.

Asda opened a £7m outlet, in Pheasant Fields Lane.

In April, it emerged that the firm was to create 40 jobs at a new store on part of the former Focus DIY store off Hill View Road, in Guisborough.

The store is scheduled to open in October.

The consulation takes place on Wednesday, June 11 between 3pm and 7pm at the Hollybush Hotel and Bar, Station Lane, before a full application is submitted to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

The company has also a freephone information line for residents with any queries ahead of the event on 0800-298-7040.
