AN injured walker was rescued on the North York Moors by 20 volunteers after suffering a suspected broken leg.

The 42-year-old man from Yarm, Stockton, had been walking at Gribdale Gate below Captain Cook’s Monument at Easby Moor when he slipped and fell awkwardly.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service called the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team for its help and volunteers were at the scene tending to the victim within 15 minutes.

Peter Mounsey, spokesman for the team, said: “The man was clearly in a great deal of pain. Ambulance paramedics and rescue team personnel treated the man with pain relief before stretchering him to the ambulance in the car park at Gribdale Gate."

He said that within 45 minutes of the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team getting the call, to which 20 volunteer members responded, the man was on his way to hospital.

"The excellent co-operative response by the team and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics meant that once he was given pain relief he was taken off to A&E at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough as quickly as possible,” he added.
