A FOUNDING father of a Darlington Cub group has died.

John Morgan, 83, was born in Stockton and raised in Darlington where he was a keen Scout.

At the age of 18 he set up the 8th Darlington Scout Troop’s Cub section with friend Eric Easthill, having been a member of the troop since he was 11-years-old.

The Cub pack still exists and meets at Darlington’s Cockerton Green.

Mr Morgan, who lived in the former Leach Grove, left Darlington in his early twenties and went on to work with young people throughout his life.

He spent many years living and working in London and latterly was a governor of Kent College.

Mr Morgan was heavily involved the Methodist church and also received a Medal of Merit from the Scout Association for his lifelong involvement in the organisation.

His brother Arthur, who still lives in Darlington, described him as an “enthusiastic and thorough” person.

He said despite the fact that Mr Morgan moved away from the North, he still described himself as a Yorkshireman.

Mr Morgan was married to Geraldine, with whom he celebrated his golden wedding anniversary with last year. He leaves two children, Mark and Amanda.
