THE Institute of Physics recently held their 'Extreme Physics' conference for GCSE students at Barnard Castle School.

It has been conducting these courses for six years at a variety of locations across the country.

Head of physics at Barnard Castle, Dr David Walton, attended the four day conference and was extremely impressed with the quality of the course and what the students covered. Topics included measuring mass in space.

The students were delighted when they were introduced to their guest lecturers, Dr Pete Edwards from the department of physics at Durham University and Professor FK Loebinger from the school of physics and astronomy at Manchester University, both renowned in their field.

Staff and students on the course were very impressed with the facilities on offer at Barnard Castle School.

Richard Bonella, from the Physics Teacher Network Co-ordinator said “The school seemed big enough to cope and small enough to care.”

As well as remarking on the excellent science facilities all of the visitors commented on the friendliness of the place and the good food.

The four day event was a great success and the school wish those students who attended the course all the best for their GCSEs.

Pupils who attended the course are eligible to apply for the Ogden Trust Scholarship which helps support students through their university study.
