MEDIEVAL combat, magnificent birds of prey and traditional fairground rides were just some of the attractions on offer at a popular annual fair this weekend.

Hundreds of people of all ages flocked to Sedgefield in County Durham yesterday (Saturday, May 17) for the 44th Sedgefield Medieval Fair.

Unlike last year’s torrential downpours, the event was blessed with glorious sunshine and bright blue skies and the town green was buzzing with activity all day long.

As always, the fair begun with the children’s fancy dress procession led by the flower queen, nine-year-old Jessica Darnton.

This year, the prize for the best costumes went to Sedgefield Hardwick Primary School, which adopted a First World War theme.

Visitors were also treated to medieval combat demonstrations, falconry displays, dancing, tug-of-war and Punch and Judy.

Other attractions included cake and craft stalls, face painting, a raffle and a children’s fairground.

Dr Wendy Gill, of Sedgefield Community Association, which organised the event, said: “Sedgefield Medieval Fair offers something for everybody.

“There are lots of activities for children and there is plenty of entertainment for older children and adults to enjoy too. The fair brings the community together.

“We always get a lot of support from local businesses.”
