SCHOOLCHILDREN swapped blackboards for chopping boards when they took part in the world’s biggest ever cookery lesson led by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

More than 200 youngsters at Fishburn Primary School in County Durham watched live footage of Mr Oliver preparing rainbow salad wraps before whipping up the healthy meal themselves in the main hall.

More than 9,000 schools across the world took part in the class today (Friday, May 16), which followed Mr Oliver’s successful attempt to break the Guinness World Record in Australia for the largest ever cookery lesson.

During the demonstration, which coincides with Food Revolution Day, the chef showed the children how to create a tasty combination of beetroot, carrots, white cabbage, pear, herbs and feta cheese.

This was then tossed in a yoghurt, oil and vinegar dressing and encased in a wholemeal tortilla wrap.

Danny Eason, headteacher of Fishburn Primary School, said: “The children really enjoyed it. I think the best way to describe it would be fun and chaotic – but sometimes the best things are.

“Almost all of the children tried the wraps and for some it was the first time they had eaten the ingredients inside.

“We actively promote healthy eating here at the school, in lessons and at our weekly cookery club.”
