GREEN-FINGERED volunteers can help a community grow together.

The team behind High Grow Darlo is appealing for people to join them in their mission to make Darlington a greener, healthier place.

The High Grow initiative involves planting vegetables, herbs and fruit in public places across the town in a bid to promote healthy eating, education and community involvement.

More than 70 places throughout Darlington will be planted with a variety of produce, with sites including schools, children’s centres, care homes and the town centre.

Once the planting is complete, the public will be invited to take their pick of the produce and enjoy it at home.

Volunteers are now being sought to help with preparation, planting and maintaining beds.

The project’s Michael Hall said: “High Grow is about planting fruit and veg but it’s about so much more than that.

“It’s about education – if we can change the eating habits of just one family towards healthier eating, then we have succeeded and hopefully that will be the case with a lot of families.

“We’re working at sites like schools and children’s centres so that we can get children excited about planting and growing and hopefully eating what they’ve grown and if that helps just a little bit, then it’s fantastic.”

He added: “This is all about the community working together and if they can’t come together over food, what can bring them together?”

People of any age are invited to volunteer, though children must be accompanied by an adult.

No experience is necessary and anyone interested can call Michael Hall on 07756-999-941 or email highgrowdarlo1@gmail.com.
