Details of school rebuilding programme to go on display

MULTI-MILLION pound plans to redevelop a Teesside school have been unveiled.

The proposals to rebuild St Michael’s RC Academy in Billingham will go on display at the school from Tuesday, May 13.

Funding will be made available from Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme.

There will be opportunities to see the plans and meet representatives from the school, Education Funding Authority and Kier Construction to discuss the proposals from 4pm to 7pm on Tuesday. The exact amount of funding has not yet been made public.

Stockton Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, Cllr Ann McCoy, said: “This is a really exciting time for all that learn and work at the academy as well as the wider Billingham community.

“We want to make sure that the facilities and design of the academy reflect our intention to ensure all our young people have the opportunity to learn in an environment which supports the teaching, therefore giving our young people and education that can help them strive to reach the ambitions and aspirations. That’s why I would like to encourage local community members as well as young people, parents and staff to come along to the drop-in sessions so we can hear their feedback.”

Maura Regan, chief executive officer, Carmel Education Trust, the lead sponsor of St Michael’s Catholic Academy, said: "This building programme’s place in the heart of the community of Billingham will be a symbol of investment in the lives of present and future generations."

It is hoped that work will start later in the year, subject to planning approval being granted, so that young people can start learning in the improved facilities from Autumn 2015

The Priority Schools Building Programme is delivered by the Government’s Education Funding Agency (EFA) who has appointed Kier Construction to design and build the development.
