FANS of Gilbert and Sullivan musicals will spend Saturday (May 3) celebrating their idols by sampling savoury sausage rolls.

The custom of eating sausage rolls on May 3 – Gilbert and Sullivan Day – is being observed by fans around the world.

From New York to Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro to Dunedin, the custom of eating sausage rolls marks the growing popularity of Savoy operas.

In Darlington, the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company will perform at Darlington Civic Theatre in July.

Theatre staff gathered at the venue on Friday to promote the show and raise awareness of this most quirky of customs.

The sausage rolls were provided by Pittaway’s butchers, whose shop is over the road from the theatre.

Cast members for the G&S show include Simon Butteriss, Richard Gaunlett, Bruce Graham and Sylvia Clarke.

The show, billed as friendly fun for all the family, runs from July 1 to 5.

Evening shows start at 7.30pm, with tickets priced from £18.
