A SCHOOL football team has won an area cup battle against Thirsk.

Richmond School’s Year 10 football team won the Richmondshire and Hambleton Area cup, in a closely fought contest 4-2 on penalties after 1-1 draw in normal time.

The match had to go to penalties after the teams couldn’t be separated in normal time, after an evenly fought contest with both teams playing a fast paced passing game.

Richmond’s goal came in the second half through Matthew Redfern scoring on the rebound after two excellent saves from the Thirsk’s keeper.

It looked like the depleted Richmond team, with two players making their debut in the final were going to hang on to a 1-0 victory, until Thirsk hit back with a well deserved last minute equaliser.

The match was settled with two penalties saves by Danny Weatherill, who was playing in goal for the first time.
