MEMBERS of Darlington Soroptimists collected sackloads of rubbish during an annual litter pick.
The litter pick, on April 24, was held at Broken Scar, on the outskirts of the town, around the children’s play area and along the banks of the River Tees.
Accompanied by countryside rangers Pippa Smalling and Debbie Hall, and using equipment provided by Darlington Borough Council’s ranger team, the Soroptimists cleared a variety of articles dropped by visitors to the picnic area and riverside.
Barbara Brown, the club’s programme action officer, said: “Broken Scar is such a lovely spot, it’s really sad to see it spoilt by litter louts.
“We picked up dozens of drinks cans and bottles, and also pieces of clothing, lollipop sticks, baby wipes and empty sweetcorn and Spam tins.
“The biggest thing was a tent, which may have been washed downriver.
“The most annoying things were the filled dog poo bags left lying on the ground or hanging in trees.”
