A MOTORIST has been killed in a collision between a car and a van in Stokesley.

Police are appealing for witnesses of the crash, which happened shortly before 7.45am today, on the A172 close to Stokesley Leisure Centre.

The collision involved a Vauxhall Vivaro van and a Peugeot 206 car, when the Peugeot was travelling towards the A19 and the Vivaro was travelling in the opposite direction.

A spokesman from North Yorkshire Police said: "We are not yet in a position to identify the person who died. It is anticipated that the identification process may take some time."

The road re-opened at 1.30pm.

Traffic Constable Emma Wallace, of the force’s roads policing group, said: “If you witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles prior to the incident, I ask you to contact the police straight away.”

Anyone who witnessed the collusion is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101. Select option 2 and pass the details to the force control room quoting reference number NYP 29042014 0065.
