MOTORISTS did a double-take when they were greeted by signs warning them about Northallerton’s upcoming May Fair.

The large yellow signs seemed to indicate that the event was going to last for almost a year – from May 30 to May 6 in fact.

The confusion was quickly cleared up and council staff moved quickly to correct the first date to April 30.

“Hambleton District Council apologies for the error with the advance notice signs for the May Fair,” said director of corporate services Martyn Richards.

“Unfortunately it was human error which was righted within 24 hours of the error being noticed.”

The High street will be filled with rides and side shows from May 1 to 5 and thousands are expected to attend.

Parking, together with bus and taxi collection points, will be changed from April 30 at 6pm until Tuesday May 6 at 8am.

Parts of the High Street between Zetland Street and All Saints Church will be closed during the fair’s opening hours and as the fair is set up and dismantled. Diversion routes will be posted throughout the town for drivers.

The Saturday market will be relocated to the southern end of the High Street.
