AN awards night is being held to celebrate inspirational parents on Teesside who care for disabled and seriously ill children.

It  is being organised by the Remembering Rebecca charity set up in the name of Ingleby Barwick’s Rebecca Sands who had a rare brain condition and was just 21 months old when she died.

Her mother, Gemma Sands, said there were many awards for children, but she wanted to recognise the “inspirational” parents who look after poorly children.

Nominations are also welcome from County Durham.

The nominees must be parents of a child with a disability or serious illness.

So far about 20 nominations have been received and it’s hoped more will be received by deadline day of Wednesday, April 30.

A total of six nominations will be chosen for the final and an invitation-only awards night will be held at the Parkmore Hotel, in Eaglescliffe, on Saturday, August 30.

Mrs Sands’ daughter, Rebecca had a rare brain condition called lissencephaly, which means "smooth brain", and died in August 2010.

The Remembering Rebecca charity has raised money to help similarly very ill children with brain conditions and their families.

Mrs Sands said: “There’s so many fantastic and inspirational parents out there, we just thought it would be nice to recognise them.”
