A WOMAN suffered a broken cheekbone and a black eye after being punched in the face by a mystery attacker.

She was walking along St John’s Crescent in York when the attack took place at about 11.55pm on March 19.

Shortly before the assault she had walked along Lord Mayors Walk and turned left onto Monkgate. As she walked along Monkgate the suspect ran past her heading in the same direction towards Penley's Grove Street.

After the incident the man ran from Penley's Grove Street, using an alleyway which leads to Jackson Street.

The attacker was in his early to mid-30s, around 6ft tall with a slim build, and short dark hair. At the time he was wearing a dark slim fitting waist length jacket, slim fitting dark jeans and black shoes.

Detectives also want to trace the driver of a small dark hatchback car, which turned right onto Penley’s Grove Street. The suspect had to wait for this car to pass before crossing the road.
