SEDGEFIELD residents and supermarket staff have gone the extra mile to raise funds for Sport Relief.

More than 100 people turned out in force for the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile at Sedgefield Racecourse in County Durham on Sunday, March 23.

Friends, families and workmates of all ages were sponsored to run one, three or six miles around the racecourse to raise funds for the charity, which uses sport to change lives in the UK and across the world.

Jill Williamson, executive director of Sedgefield Racecourse, said: “It was an amazing day.

"Watching the community come together to support such a great cause was brilliant and we feel so proud knowing that the money raised here will help people living really tough lives right here in County Durham, the UK and across the world.”

All over the UK, people of all ages came together to run, swim or cycle at more than 1,000 Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games events.

Staff and customers at Sainsbury’s in Sedgefield were no exception, raising £2,000 for the cause.

Fundraising activities included a book sale, custard dunking, blind tent building and a truck pull, as well as the Sport Relief Mile at the racecourse.

Nationally, the supermarket chain raised more than £6.5m.

Sedgefield store manager Shaun Dixon said: “I’d like to thank all our customers who made a donation to Sport Relief, whether through buying this year’s merchandise or making a donation to one of our Sport Relief fundraising events in-store.”
