HEAD of Steam museum staff are to visit St Mark’s Church, Darlington, next month (April) to talk about their new project and recruit volunteers.

Staff will be at the North Road church on April 9 to discuss the North East Railways in World War One project which focuses on the contribution of railway workers in the region during the Great War.

Archival documents will be on display and staff hope to recruit volunteers to help to identify the records of railways workers who contributed to the war effort, or served in the forces, and enter them into the online database.

The project is Lottery-funded and Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “This project will show the huge contribution to the First World War that railway workers made.

“It is also a great opportunity to think about volunteering and making a contribution to preserving our heritage for the future.”

Staff will be in St Mark’s Church from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

If it was not for the fantastic efforts of Railwaymen (NO pathetic negative Union interference then) nearly 'half' of Britain in Towns and Cities would have starved.
