A THEATRE show about the demise of the mining industry has started its five-night run after overcoming controversy over the involvement of a brass band.
Brassed Off runs at Darlington Civic Theatre until Saturday (March 22), having opened on Tuesday.
The production suffered problems last month, when the Durham Constabulary Brass Band pulled out amid complaints from the mining community.
Although the band is made up of civilians, many felt the police band’s involvement was inappropriate in the context of the role officers played in the 1984 Miners’ Strike.
There were fears that objectors could picket the theatre to make their views felt.
Durham Miners’ Association Band agreed to take over from the police band.
Brassed Off stars John McArdle, Clara Darcy and James Robinson.
Based on the screenplay by Mark Herman, Paul Allen’s adaption coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike.
Evening performances start at 7.30pm, with matinees at 2pm on Thursday and 2.30pm on Saturday.
