Police road safety day complements careless driver crackdown in Darlington

A MONTH-long police operation against rogue motorists on a main route into Darlington has been complemented by a road safety day.

For the last four weeks police have been taking action against careless and inconsiderate drivers on Yarm Road after councillors and residents raised concerns with officers.

As part of the ongoing operation, police held a road safety awareness day in Morrison’s car park at Morton Park to drive home the message that careless driving will not be tolerated on Darlington’s roads.

Activities included a driving simulator, bicycle marking, Neighbourhood Watch promotion and a car-cutting demonstration by the fire brigade.

Sgt Mark Ralphs, of Darlington police, said the event proved popular with visitors.

He added: “It was excellent. There were lots of people coming throughout the day who were really interested in what we were doing, which is brilliant.”

If the police got out of the Gladstone street station and positioned themselves with a handheld radar gun at the junction of Gladstone street and Easson Road they would catch a lot more speeders than they would in Yarm road. Speeding is anti social behaviour. Why can't the police do something about it ?

i walk down down yarm road 2 twice a day to take the kids to school and i never seen any police about not once, last week my daughter was walking ahead of me and a car came out of hundens lane so fast that 2 wheels came of the floor, ive never been so scared in my life i thought it was gunna roll. This was at 8.40 am and the crank driving even had the cheek to beep his horn as he passed me.

I've seen cars on North Road doing at least 70 mph. Once side by side. Getting behind the wheel of a car seems to turn some people into idiots. Penalties are unrealistic.
