SHOPPERS are able to receive free home safety advice and childproofing equipment at a special pop up shop in Stockton this week.

Stockton Council will open the temporary shop in The Shambles on the High Street as part of a wider campaign to make people aware of the dangers of every day household items to babies and small children, such as laundry liquitabs, nappy sacks, blind cords and cell batteries.

Parents and carers will be able to pick up a range of free child safety equipment for their own homes including blind cord safety devices, cupboard catches, bath mats and vouchers for lockable medicine cabinets.

Representatives from Cleveland Fire Brigade will also be on hand to offer fire safety advice and answer questions throughout the event.

Councillor Steve Nelson, the Council’s cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: “Most people who have or care for young children are aware of the common hazards around the home but some everyday household objects like plastic nappy bags and blind cords can also cause a safety risk if children have easy access to them.”

The shop will be open between 10am and 3pm, from Wednesday, March 19 to Friday 21.

Further information leaflets and posters will be available in GP surgeries, libraries, children’s centres and nurseries across the Borough.
