RESIDENTS views are being sought as Cleveland’s Police and Crime Commissioner takes to the road with his ‘Community Remedy’ proposals designed to address anti-social behaviour.

Barry Coppinger will be undertaking a series of roadshows across the force area to collect opinions on a list of actions which may be carried out by an offender who has committed a relatively low level offence as an alternative to court proceedings.

He said: “I am committed to diverting people from offending, and where possible rehabilitating offenders to prevent them from reoffending.

“We know that for some offenders entering the criminal justice system can lead to a lifelong cycle of offending, and initiatives such as community remedy, which focus on rehabilitation from a very early stage are a key means of preventing future reoffending, whilst also empowering victims by giving them a say in the reparation carried out by the offender.”

Consultation has already been undertaken with public and voluntary sector organisations across Cleveland in putting together a proposed menu of reparation activities.

Members of the public will be asked to select what they view as the most appropriate sanctions from the list, and suggest alternatives.

The roadshows will be taking place in the following locations:

• Middlesbrough – tomorrow (Monday, March 17), 11am to 1pm, in the Cleveland Centre

Hartlepool – Thursday, March 20, 11am to 1pm, in the Middleton Grange shopping centre

• Stockton – Wednesday, March 26, 11am to 1pm, in the Castlegate Shopping Centre

Redcar and Cleveland – Friday, March 28, 11am to 1pm, on Redcar High Street Members of the public can also complete the questionnaire online at www.cleveland.pcc.police.uk. All views should be received by April 30.
