WINNERS all the way - knitters from the WI have created more than 1,140 tiny knitted jerseys to help celebrate the Tour de France when it comes to North Yorkshire.

Harrogate Borough Council plans to decorate the district with unusual bunting when the race comes to the region in July.

The Tour de Bunting project has seen tiny jerseys contributed by knitters from across Europe and beyond – and the ladies of the North Yorkshire West Federation of the WI were quick to volunteer their services.

With permission from the creators of the jersey knitting pattern, the federation put the full details in its monthly newsletter so members could get straight to work.

And women from institutes across the area gathered at the headquarters in Ripon to present their creations to the council, which now has more than 10,000 jerseys in total.

Federation chairman Julie Clarke said: “As soon as we heard about the Tour de Bunting project, we knew it was something we wanted to get involved in, and that our members would be inspired by.

“The response we have had has been overwhelming. It has also been a great chance for our members to get together and feel part of a much bigger project.”
