Cruelty case woman from Thirsk concocted glowing statement from boss to save her from prison

A CARE worker who faced prison for animal cruelty gave magistrates a bogus reference from her boss which described her as "a caring and kind" member of staff.

Margaret Briggs' plan backfired when a court official recognised her handwriting - and she was also hit with a charge of trying to pervert the course of justice.

Yesterday, the shamed 51-year-old, from Thirsk, North Yorkshire, was jailed after a Teesside Crown Court judge told her: "Margaret Briggs and the truth are strangers."

The court heard how she handed magistrates a "completely false" reference, trying to avoid prison, saying: "I cannot speak highly enough of Maggie . . . we need her."

The fake document described Briggs as "a very valuable member of staff, caring, kind, generous, considerate and knowledgeable" and "good at what she does".

Recorder Toby Hedworth, QC, jailed her for three months after telling her: "Your claim that you were providing evidence of employment was one of many lies.

"Offending in this way strikes at the integrity of the criminal justice system, and a clear message must be sent out that only custody will follow conduct of this sort.

"The public policy requirement of people being straightforward and honest in their dealings with the court requires that there must be an immediate prison sentence."

Briggs, of Cliff Cottage, Boltby, was found guilty after a trial last month, and her barrister, Paul Cleasby, admitted yesterday that her attitude was "challenging".

He urged Mr Recorder Hedworth not to jail Briggs even though the sentencing guidelines say custody should be imposed except in "exceptional circumstances".

Mr Cleasby told the judge: "She has, in the past, served a prison sentence. It is an experience she very much dreads. It is nothing she relishes. She is anxious to avoid it.

"She is currently studying for a degree and any period of custody will, of course, have a significant impact on that. She runs the risk of not being able to qualify."

Mr Recorder Hedworth told Briggs that she had been convicted by the jury on "the clearest possible evidence" and said: "You concocted a completely false reference.

"The reality is, that the manageress (of the home in Northallerton) had serious concerns about your conduct and would never have written such a reference."

Sounds like you are a village of gossipers to me! Who can deny that crimes do not deserve punishment... but to slander someone who is serving their time on the basis of a report is questionable! I believe this woman has been convicted for animal cruelty twice, the first being appealed and the second not. This third case seems to me to be about trying to save her back and regrettably it backfirsred. Who wouldn't try to save their own bacon? And true it deserves justice, but my question is why? Why would this Miss Briggs want to save herself? Who is she fighting for if she lives around you gossips, if her children have left home and if she is a Miss and not a Mrs. Perhaps generosity and sympathy could help to end cases like this? People get what they put in right? So after you cast this women to an outsider what is likely here? More hands make light work. I also noted a mention of a degree so perhaps indicating that this woman has fight, a belief in herself to always achieve and do better... if that is worth slandering then so too do you for your words of oppression.

This is certainly not what she deserves, she deserves LIFE! What makes this worse is that she’s been sent to prison, not for the years of cruelty she’s inflicted on her cats, dogs, horses and the dead donkeys, but it’s for her lying about her being a valuable member of her workplace, something I can hardly believe as she is the an ill-mannered, uncaring liar, who repeatedly offends. If she’s dreading the experience so much she should have learnt from the last time she was in prison, then she might not have to go back!
To all those defending her, this woman moved to the pretty village over 10 years ago with her rabble of rude, violent & troublesome children. Why, I don’t know, they should have been put in a town council house instead of a house rented in the beautiful countryside, but what did the owners care, they have been getting paid by the council for them to live there, and they haven’t had to put up with their appalling behavior the villagers have endured as they live in another pretty village called Hawnby. However, they should have cared, Margaret Briggs and her family have completely and utterly destroyed the once pretty little house in every way possible, the fences, the garden, the brickwork, the inside is almost unlivable and there is no heating in the house.

This latest incident of her huskies attacking & killing the poor defenseless dog from across the road isn’t the first incident with the dogs, they have repeatedly got out of their small cage, attacked sheep, run into others gardens. However, I don’t blame the dogs, I feel sorry for them, huskies are big dogs who need walking, feeding & treating properly, not locking up for hours and fed minute portions of food. I guess they are lucky to even get fed though, as she used to feed her horses bread!!

I also wouldn’t say her children are going through hell, all of them have moved out of home, and have often said they don’t want anything to do with her and they themselves think she shouldn’t have animals!

Landofthelost… you’re obviously one of Margaret’s children, why don’t you go & ask the police for the pictures of the poor dog across the road that lost it’s life, and then say it wasn’t mauled?! The road that the man was walking down is a public road and footpath, all the people down that road have dogs but unlike Margaret Briggs they look after them & keep them in safe enclosures, if he repeatedly aggravated them then so has everyone else who has ever walked past, not likely!!! As for your comment of him peering through the window, don’t be so absurd, the bathroom window is a private window! He is a lovely man, and like everyone else apart from your family in the village just wants a quiet life, you’re family have brought thugs to the village, police on a weekly basis and the hell to peoples lives in general. If your mother has mental health problems then she should go & get help, not buy animals she can’t look after, after all she works in a hospital!!

This woman had been served with an eviction notice by her landlords who have finally decided to take action on the situation, an eviction notice she chose to ignore & the bailiffs were due to visit, I hope now she’s been put where she belongs she never returns, but no doubt as the justice & benefits system is so messed up in this country she’ll return to cast misery on the poor people she lives near!!

After further research into this case, I have discovered it is a report very nonfactual. What people don't know they just make up! Just like you here hiding behind this essay of untruths.
1) The rent is indeed paid by Miss Briggs - who receives no benefits and never has in her history - the house is privately owned and rented.
2) Miss Briggs' children have indeed moved from the village and I'm informed they all have jobs and are earning their own pockets. Tragic it seems that despite them going on to lead successful lives in the world of work you have time to write this essay slandering children. /was this before or after you went to the job centre?
3) Miss Briggs has one child who I believe still lives at home (Despite your comment of it being unlivable) and is looking further into selling the animals remaining at Cliffe Cottage.
4) I discovered Miss Briggs has lived in the village of Boltby for 10 years, whilst many have come and gone and whilst she has suffered from your badgering, spying, gossiping and bullying. You clearly feel you have a lot of negative things to say about Miss Briggs and her children and yet you are a further example of someone who doesn't care to lend a hand.
5) You seem to have targeted Landofthelost as one of Miss Briggs' children and yet still concocted lies about her family. (You should be ashamed of yourself)
6) I have looked into previous cases of mental health in the village and I discovered one adult who had been admitted for such case and yet he received kindness yet you can't do the same here?
7) I also found a document of an elderly gentleman who was gagged and threatened with knives in his own home in the village of Boltby, doesn't sound like the pretty village you are describing.
8) Several complaints have been put forward to the landlords, many of which are false, just like your statement and I believe her lease at Cliffe Cottage will remain ongoing... POOR YOU!
9) Help those in need, you clearly have a lot of time on your hand, then again who would want a friend like you, I'm sure you wouldn't say it to the victim and the family, probably will peer through the windows at night.
10) I hate the benefits system, I believe this country can be rectified with righteous people henceforth I am quoting your statement, it's people who observe and do nothing that should be locked up!

If your mother has mental health problems then she should go & get help, not buy animals she can’t look after, after all she works in a hospital!! This woman had been served with an eviction notice by her landlords who have finally decided to take action on the situation, an eviction notice she chose to ignore & the bailiffs were due to visit, I hope now she’s been put where she belongs she never returns, but no doubt as the justice & benefits system is so messed up in this country she’ll return to cast misery on the poor people she lives near!![/p][/quote]After further research into this case, I have discovered it is a report very nonfactual. (You should be ashamed of yourself) 6) I have looked into previous cases of mental health in the village and I discovered one adult who had been admitted for such case and yet he received kindness yet you can't do the same here? FYI: I am one to scower the papers every morning. As I have previously stated I indeed believe this women is having serious troubles, perhaps in fact a mid life crises. However, what a shame it is one cannot offer respect for privacy and you are a candidate to throw stones to the villain in the stocks. A single women with so many responsibilities must fight for all that they can in times of desperation and what with your village badgering the windows every night, she must make sure everything is in place for your beedy eyes with further funding. I'm informed she does not drink, does not smoke and does not indulge in the finer things in life so perhaps this money was put to good use, better in the hands of a desperate victim than a drug user. Shame on you, now put that wine away during the early afternoon.
