A TEENAGER who failed to stop after an accident in a supermarket car park was driving without a licence or insurance, a court heard.

Michael Harry Cumiskey caused £180-worth of damage when his Ford Fiesta hit an unoccupied Fiat Punto at Aldi car park in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, on March 25 last year.

Paula Sanderson, prosecuting at the town’s magistrates court today (Tuesday, March 11), said an eye witness had seen Cumiskey, of Elmfield Street, Darlington, drive into the car park at speed.

“The car then moved away from the witness and he heard the sound of a car colliding with a parked vehicle,” said Ms Sanderson.

The court heard how the 18-year-old had then fled the scene, driving on the wrong side of Greenwell Road as he made his getaway.

Cumiskey, who had bought the car the previous day, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after a road accident, failing to report a road accident, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

He told the court he had acted stupidly, adding: “I was just really excited to drive my new car.”

Magistrates fined Cumiskey £110 for driving without insurance and eight penalty points were added to his licence.

His licence was also endorsed for the other offences and he was ordered to pay £180 compensation, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
