A TEESSIDE MP has argued that 16 and 17-year-olds should no longer be allowed to join the military.

Alex Cunningham, MP for Stockton North, has previously campaigned on the issue and has now welcomed a Defence Select Committee parliamentary report that recommended new recruits should be 18.

At present 16-year-olds can join the armed forces but can not be sent to combat zones until they are 18.

Mr Cunningham said: “Not many people realise that having 16 as a minimum recruitment age is hardly typical amongst developed and democratic countries, and I would bet that most have never asked themselves whether it can be right to enlist 16 and 17-year-olds.”
