THE National Trust is putting the impact of the First World War under the spotlight at its regional headquarters.

Goddards, on Tadcaster Road, in York, was the former family home of the Terry family, once owners of the Terry's of York chocolate empire.

And it re-opens this weekend with a brand new display for the 100th anniversary of the war - telling the story of how the family and life at their famous chocolate factory were affected by the conflict, both at home and abroad.

Being staged throughout the house, it features letters, photographs, artifacts showing the change for both the family and factory right up to the Second World war.

Visitor experience manager Clare Fletcher said: “The wartime display tells the story of loss, love, service and duty and charts the change both for family and business during the two world wars.”

The Terrys and the Wars runs from March 1 to June 18. Goddards is open Wednesdays to Sundays. For more information contact 01904-771930 or visit nationaltrust.org.uk/goddards
