A TEESSIDE grandmother plans to visit her son in Cyprus after winning £25,000 in the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Maria Wedgewood, of Billingham, was at home when she was surprised by the lottery presenter and former Radio DJ Judie McCourt who presented her with her cheque.

“I’m in shock,” said Mrs Wedgewood. “My stomach is turning around and I’m shaking.

“My husband David came home from work about an hour after I’d been presented with my cheque. I told him I’d won £500 and he seemed quite happy about that. I asked him to close his eyes and then I put the cheque in his hands – you should have seen his face.”

She said her husband was keen to buy a greyhound to race and that she wanted to visit her son, Craig, who is serving with the Army in Cyprus, and his family.

“I don’t see my grandchildren James and Mia as much as I’d like,” she said. “I’m going to go on Skype later to tell them the good news.”

The lottery helps to raise money for charity, including the Butterwick Hospice in Stockton.
