FIREFIGHTERS called to a kitchen fire have stressed the importance of smoke alarms.

Two appliances from Darlington Fire Station attended the blaze at around 3.10pm today, which broke out in the kitchen of a first-floor flat above Veno’s Pizzeria, in Yarm Road.

Nobody was injured in the fire which caused smoke damage to the flat.

John Jameson, assistant station manager at Darlington Fire Station, said the flat did not have a smoke alarm.

“We got here as fast as we could, but the alarm would have been raised faster if the flat had a fire alarm,” he said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
