TWO bakers who were runners up in a television competition have been congratulated by the mayor of Richmond.

Alex Franks and Di Dinsdale of the Angel’s Share bakery in the Station, Richmond, were finalists in ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery, which ended last week.

The final brief was to create a show-stopping wedding cake and they made a four-tiered oval sponge cake with a raspberry and orange and pomegranate and lemon filling in shades of pink.

But a couple getting married chose the creation from David and Lindsay Wright, from the Cake Shop Bakery from Woodbridge in Suffolk, which saw them scoop the grand prize.

Richmond Mayor, Councillor Bob White and Mayoress Moira White, presented the bakers with bouquets at the store on Saturday.

Coun White said: “Moira and I watched the series and saw Alex and Di do some wonderful baking - I personally think the final cake should have clinched a win.

“I not only congratulate them for being the best in the North-East and Scotland and for the standard of their baking in the final, buut I also thank them for raising the profile of the Station and Richmond. They made excellent ambassadors for our town.”

The duo were competing under the watchful eye of judges cake connoisseur Mich Turner and bread expert, Peter Sidwell.
