A POLICE and Crime Commissioner is joining residents in the fight against speeding motorists.

Ron Hogg, of County Durham and Darlington, is visiting Community Speedwatch events across the force area.

So far they have been held at Embleton Drive in Chester-le-Street and Rose Terrace in Stanhope.

Community Speedwatch involves the police, council and residents monitoring speeds in problem areas.

Mr Hogg said: “One of the top policing priorities voted for by County Durham and Darlington residents was road safety-related issues and community. Speedwatch is a great way for local residents to be actively involved in addressing concerns about vehicle speeds in their area.

“It’s about education rather than enforcement and helps to make drivers realise the error of their ways when they ignore a speed restriction.

"Speeding contributes to road traffic collisions and affects the lives and well-being of people in local communities.

“I fully welcome projects like Community Speedwatch, where areas with speeding problems can be monitored and further police action can be taken if necessary.”
