THE region’s tourism capital is hoping to make itself even more popular – by suspending its parking charges.

The one-day-only offer will see all the council-owned car-parks in York being available for free all day and evening on February 1.

Thirteen car parks will be free to use for residents and visitors to help them enjoy the city and its attractions.

The initiative has been designed to support local businesses and retailers in what is regarded as the quietest time of the year for retailers.

Council leader James Alexander said: “We have spoken to local businesses and recognised that this is a time of year when businesses most need a boost, as we all know how quiet the city can be in the post-Christmas period and we at the council are happy to support them.”

The car parks that will be free to use on February 1 are: Bishopthorpe Road, Bootham Row, Castle, Castle Mills, Esplanade, Foss Bank, Haymarket, Marygate, Monkbar, Nunnery Lane, Piccadilly, St George’s Field and Union Terrace.
