FREE tickets are being released to watch the Tour de France when it sets off from York.

From 9am tomorrow, Thursday, 20,000 free tickets will be available for York Racecourse when it hosts the start of Day Two of the Grand Départ on July 6.

Ticketholders at the racecourse will be able to go into the stands to watch both the spectacle of the build up to the race and then the cyclists.

The leading riders will be presented to the crowds before they head into York and then start the competitive racing.

Giant screens and hundreds of televisions around the site will allow visitors to follow all the action from the Tour itself as it heads towards the daily finish in Sheffield; as well as wider sporting action from the Men’s Final at Wimbledon and the British Formula One Grand Prix.

Senior racecourse manager Tony Lee said, “We understand the ability of sport to thrill so it is a real honour that such a famous event is coming to York. In our history we have hosted the Queen, the Pope, Royal Ascot, the St Leger, the Olympic Torch and now Le Tour is coming.”

There is a limit of four tickets per address. Visit yorkracecourse.co.uk
