FIFTY pigeons were killed in a fire on an East Cleveland allotment in the early hours of this morning (Monday January 20).

Fire crews from Skelton and Loftus were called to the allotments in Liverton Mines at about 12.30am. They used two hosereels to extinguish the blaze, which they said killed approximately 50 pigeons and damaged the pigeon loft.

A neighbouring garden hut was also damaged by smoke and fire.

The fire is being investigated and scenes of crime officers were understood to be looking for evidence this afternoon, but the cause is currently unknown.

A police spokeswoman said: "Cleveland Police attended a fire at an allotment on Graham Street in Liverton Mines at around 12.30am this morning. Enquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire."
