A CHURCH has donated £600 to a cathedral’s Lego model appeal.
The pledge towards Durham Cathedral’s Open Treasure appeal from St Mary’s Barnard Castle with Whorlton entitled the County Durham church to add 600 plastic bricks an ever-growing Lego model of the Cathedral, which will eventually include 350,000 bricks and measure nearly four metres long and 1.7m high.
The church added a wall section to the model Chapel of the Nine Altars.
Parishioners have been building the miniature over the last few weeks along with members of a newly formed Lego club at Green Lane Church of England Primary School.
Organiser Frances Stenlake said: “We are delighted to support Durham Cathedral and its Open Treasure appeal.
“In particular the aim to enable the Cathedral to remain free to all visitors was felt to be important; our Christian heritage should be accessible to all, regardless of income.
“The opportunity to physically build Durham Cathedral in Lego, rather than merely writing a cheque, was also welcomed.
“We started building our piece of wall after a main Sunday morning service. It was a really good talking point and the children even let some of the rest of the congregation take part.”
The £10m Open Treasure project will see the Cathedral get new world-class exhibition spaces and more. For more information, visit durhamcathedral.co.uk
