A NEON sculpture will adorn the front of a landmark museum after an online appeal to pay for it reached the target with more than a day to spare.

The display, which will be created by British sculptor Gavin Turk, will numerically highlight the world's population – 7,201,964,238 – when his solo exhibition of neon pieces opens at The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, on January 25.

The sculpture was commissioned by the museum and an online appeal launched via the fundraising site Kickstarter to raise the £6,000 required by 1pm on Monday, January 13.

With a day to spare, more than £7,200 had been pledged.

This included two promises of more than £1,000 in return for a limited edition piece created by the artist in 2009 and three more individual donations of more than £350.

Mr Turk said the neon display on the front of The Bowes Museum will be seen from as far away as the A66 for the duration of his exhibition, which will run until April 14.
