A MAN is fighting for life in hospital after his moped was in collision with a car on a busy city road.

He was riding his orange Aprilia machine along the A19 into York when it collided with a black Ford Fiesta at around 5.40pm on Wednesday, January 8.

The accident happened on Shipton Road, at the junction of Howard Road, opposite the Mitre pub and the road was closed for four hours in the wake of the incident.

The moped rider, a 21-year-old from Nether Poppleton, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver and passenger in the Fiesta, both from York, were not injured.

Traffic Constable Roger Walker said: “The collision happened at a busy time of day and I believe that there are a number of people who witnessed who have not yet contacted the police. I urge them to do so straight away.

“I also need to speak to you if you saw either vehicle prior to the incident and ask you to get in touch.”

Contact York police on 101, select option two and ask for Roger Walker. Alternatively information can be emailed to roger.walker@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
