PEOPLE are being encouraged to kick-start their New Year fitness regimes by signing up for one of the region’s toughest – and muddiest – challenges.

Registration for Muddy Mayhem, at Hardwick Park, near Sedgefield in County Durham, is already open and those who sign up before the end of this month will receive a £5 discount on the entrance fee.

The event, organised by Durham County Council, is taking place on Sunday, March 23, and competitors can choose between a 5km or a 10km obstacle-filled mud run.

Standard entrance fees are £25 for the 5km course and £30 for the 10km course and the early bird discounts are available for people who register before Friday, January 31.

Maria Murphy, countryside development officer at Durham County Council, said: “We’re urging people to sign up now for the Muddy Mayhem event.

“As well as being able to take advantage of the early bird discount people will also have a big incentive to keep up their New Year fitness plans.

“And as an added incentive people can also choose to raise money for one of our three chosen charities – Help for Heroes, Butterwick Hospice or Butterfly Conservation.”
