A COUNCIL development manager is in the pink after landing a new job as the director of one of the most popular flower shows in Britain.

Nick Smith, 35, has a background in landscape architecture and as development manager for culture and leisure at Stockton Council was responsible for the £8m redevelopment of the historic museum and grounds at Preston Park.

He has now taken over as director of the Harrogate Flower Show.

He spent much of his early career working in the landscape industry in Ireland working on nationally recognised projects including government buildings in Belfast and the redevelopment of Quintin Castle in County Down.

Mr Smith said “As an avid visitor to the Harrogate Flower Shows for the last 20 years, I am delighted to be joining the team at such an exciting time.

“The shows were recently rated Britain’s best gardening events by Which and are undoubtedly the most prestigious independent events in the UK gardening calendar.

"I am looking forward to working with both the show team and our exhibitors to build on that tremendous success and ensure that our visitors will continue to find all the ideas and inspiration they need, as well as enjoying a great day out."

Mr Smith’s now digging in and working towards his first show which opens in Harrogate from April 24 to 27.
