Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council staff urged to show solidarity with colleagues facing redundancy by taking part in 'Wear It Black Day'

Darlington and Stockton Times: Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council staff facing redundancy. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council staff facing redundancy.

AS council staff return to work union bosses are urging them to take part in ‘Wear It Black Day’ on Monday (January 6) to mourn job losses.

Unison members at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have organised the event to coincide with the issuing of redundancy notices as the authority looks to lose 150 posts.

Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP, Tom Blenkinsop, has told union organisers he will wear a black tie in parliament in solidarity with the protest.

UNISON branch secretary Andrew Tickle said: "We’re pleased our ‘Wear It Black’ campaign has sparked a public debate.

"It is important that everyone understands the impact these job losses and cuts to public services will have on the families of hardworking council staff, the local economy and the most vulnerable people in our community.”

I could sympathize if the savings/cuts were reflected in less tax being demanded every year! So where is the money going to that is being 'saved'?
A business would not survive for very long if they cut the service provided and still expect the customer to pay for yet another non-existent service.

Its a great pity that people still haven't a clue about local government finance. Council tax is only a relatively small percentage of the council's spending pot. Its the grants from central government that have been slashed to the bone. Council tax increase and services slashed is the end result.

redcar and cleveland staff have my full sympathy and support.

All big organisations have well paid staff at the top - its a fact of life. My sympathy and support is for the ordinary workers who are set to lose their jobs. As ever it is those at the bottom that suffer the most.
