A CAR park could still be developed into a new supermarket for Malton as a revised planning application has been submitted.

The amended application for Wentworth Street car park, by developer GMI Holbeck Ltd, includes in its plans an enhanced walkway to Malton Market Place, three hours’ free parking and an area for public events.

The plans were initially approved in 2012 by Ryedale District Council but it was forced to reconsider the approval in favour of similar proposals for the Malton livestock market by the Fitzwilliam (Malton) Estate, following a planning inquiry.

GMI Holbeck Ltd has said its new plans are supported by an updated Retail Impact Assessment, which includes details from the Ryedale Local Plan and the impact of possible redevelopment of the livestock market.

The developers say that more than £31m worth of food store expenditure is spent outside of Malton and Ryedale annually.

But Councillor David Lloyd-Williams, chairman of the Malton and Norton Area Partnership, said: “When the district council was minded to approve the original application for the car park, they said the area could only support one more supermarket and therefore refused the livestock application.

“But the livestock decision has now been overturned on appeal – so the same agenda should apply.”
