THE Ministry of Justice has said it is still considering options for the future use of a prison, almost four months after announcing its closure.

Government officials declined to say when a decision would be reached on the Northallerton Prison site, which saw its final inmates leave in November, but officially closed yesterday after 230 years.

Business and council leaders have urged the Ministry of Justice to make a rapid decision about the town centre site's future and say its redevelopment will be key to the helping regenerate the town.

Last month, the National Audit Office warned closing the 252-place prison as part of a modernisation programme may have been a mistake as it was a high-perfoming jail.
