A MAN from the region has been arrested at an airport on suspicion of child abduction.

The 34-year-old from York was detained at Luton airport on Saturday afternoon (December 28) following an urgent investigation by North Yorkshire police.

Earlier in the day a woman from the city reported her two-year-old boy had been taken by her husband, who intended to leave the country.

York CID launched an urgent investigation and contacted their colleagues at Luton Airport.

Officers from the UK Border Agency found the child safe and well on a plane about to leave England. He has now been reunited with his mother.

The suspect was arrested on the plane and is currently being transported back to York where he will be questioned by officers from North Yorkshire Police’s Major Crime and Protecting Vulnerable Persons Units.

Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “North Yorkshire Police is extremely grateful to our partners at the UK Border Agency and the other law enforcement agencies at the airport for their swift and effective response.

“I would also like to thank all the staff from North Yorkshire Police who were involved in this fast moving incident.”
