POLICE have renewed their plea for witnesses to a serious road accident that left a baby girl with a suspected fractured skull on Christmas Day.
The six-month-old child was travelling in a red Suzuki Alto when it left the A66 road, near Barnard Castle in County Durham, and crashed into a large coping stone on the grass verge.
A 20-year-old woman from Middlesbrough, believed to be the baby’s mother, suffered serious abdominal injuries and had to be cut from the car by firefighters.
The driver, a 33-year-old man, also from Middlesbrough, who is believed to be the child’s father, broke his arm and two other passengers, a 42-year-old woman from Dumfries in Scotland and a 60-year-old man from Redcar, were treated for minor injuries.
Initially, the baby was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital but she was later transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where her condition is classed as “serious but stable.”
The young woman remains at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
The accident occurred at a sharp bend on the eastbound carriageway of the A66, near the slip road to Rokeby Park, at about 7.10pm.
Accident investigators are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact Durham police on 101 and quote the incident number 201-25/12/2013.
