"Sexual deviant" ex-Cleveland policeman sentenced to 19 years for series of rapes and assaults
A FORMER police officer branded a "sexual deviant" has been jailed for 19 years for a series of sickening sex attacks.
Wayne Scott carried out eight rapes and assaults on a number of victims over several years.
Judge James Goss QC described him as a ‘manipulative, controlling and domineering’ man who left one of his victims fearful of further attacks.
Newcastle Crown Court heard how the disgraced former officer also offered to pay a teenage girl for sex on a number of occasions as well carrying out a sexual assault on her.
One of his victims was in court to hear him being sentenced today (Monday, December 23).
The court heard how Scott, formerly of Stockton, has contacted one of his victims by letter and sent her a visitor form to see him in prison.
During the hearing, he sat with his head bowed, mouthing sorry to people in the public gallery and as the sentence was passed he slumped into his seat.
The court heard extracts from one of his victim's personal impact statement where she said she was in fear of his release.
She wrote: "In the past two weeks Wayne has sent me a card and a letter, and the letter contained a visitor order."
And she concluded: "Not once throughout the whole process has he said sorry for raping me."
Scott was found guilty of rape and attempted rape after a five day trial in October.
After one of his rapes he wrote on a social media site ‘Think today is going to be a good day’.
He had already pleaded guilty to seven rapes, two common assaults, one sexual assault and two charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The offences were carried out on three victims, including a teenage girl.
The judge said: “Your offending has had an enormous impact on the wellbeing, confidence and lives of those against whom you offended, destroying their lives.”
He added: “Your anger and determination in committing the offences of rape frightened her greatly.”
His offences came to light after he was dismissed by Cleveland Police when a member of the public complained about him touching her sexually while on duty.
Although he was not prosecuted for that offence, the publicity led other women to come forward and make complaints.
Scott was told he was being given an extended prison sentence to protect the public from his sexually behaviour and would face at least ten years in prison.
Speaking outside court, Detective Superintendent Peter McPhillips, who led the investigation, said: “I am really pleased with the sentence today, Wayne Scott is a sexual deviant and a predator, he manipulated his victims and had a significant detrimental impact on their lives, yet he has never exhibited any remorse and he does not appear to have the intelligence or self awareness to understand the horrific nature of his crimes.
“I would like to play tribute to all of his victims, in particular those who we managed to trace and who were brave enough to provide us with the details of his crimes. I hope that they gain some satisfaction in knowing that he will now serve a long prison sentence and I hope that they can start to rebuild and move on with their lives.”
Since his arrest, the 37-year-old has twice tried to kill himself - jumping from a prison balcony and leaping from a moving vehicle while on his way to a medical examination.
Senior officers have said there are allegations from eight more victims that did not make it to court and they have again appealed for any other victims to come forward.
Anyone wanting to report an attack by Scott is urged to call Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 55 5 111.
