SUPPORTERS of Richmond have been recognised in an event hosted by the town mayor.

Coun Bob White and Richmond Town Council held the Investors in Richmond evening last week, after receiving nominations for people the council or residents feel have gone the extra mile to support the town.

To mark the efforts the council awards a certificate and the winners’ names are placed on the Investors in Richmond boards in the Town Hall.

This year the four recipients were: Gerry Cresfield, nominated for his gardening work in St Mary’s church yard and other areas around the town where has voluntarily spent a lot of time and effort keeping the grounds in good order.

David Johnson, nominated for his work as Poppy Organiser for the Richmond Branch of the Royal British Legion. For the past 15 years Mr Johnson has co-ordinated the branch’s efforts collecting for the Poppy Appeal, and has this year helped Richmond area raise £20,000.

Manager of Richmond Tourist Information Centre Hilda Ellis collected the award on behalf of the centre’s team of 17 volunteers, who have worked hard over the years.

Through the period of confusion after the withdrawal of district council funding and closure of the old building, Ms Ellis took it upon herself to set up in the present location.

Richmond Bowls Club, in Ronaldshay Park, has for very many years provided a facility to the town. The club has a history of success in its own right and has also hosted national competitions. It runs training for youngsters and disabled groups and is open to anyone in the Richmond area.

The event, which coincided with the Rising of the Council for Christmas, was attended by members of the council, recipients of the award and their friends and family.
