A MAN died after a vehicle hit a pedestrian in Barnard Castle last night.

The emergency services were called to the B6278 just north of Barnard Castle Golf Club at 10.20pm.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police said a vehicle travelling out of the town appears to have struck a male pedestrian who was walking in the road.

The man, who was dressed in dark clothing, died of his injuries at the scene.

A male passenger from the vehicle suffered facial injuries and was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The other occupants of the vehicle suffered from shock.

The B6278 was closed from 10.30am to 2.30am.

Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the man walking along the road are asked to call police on 101.

*An earlier report on the incident based on details supplied by Durham Police said a passenger in the car suffered fatal injuries. This has now been corrected by the force to make clear that the passenger suffered facial injuries.
