A GROUP of young carers from Stockton has won a regional award for their commitment and dedication.

Young Carers Aloud, which is for young people who look after a family member, won the Making a Difference category at the Positive Social Behaviour Order Awards.

The awards are hosted annually to recognise the positive contribution young people make in their communities.

Members of Young Carers Aloud all attend respite care and activities at Eastern Ravens Trust in the town.

All the young people care for a member of their family affected by ill health, including mental health, substance misuse, physical disability and physical illness.

As well as their caring roles at home the young people all volunteer their time on a weekly basis to raise awareness of young carers and their issues.

Ann McCoy, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This award is testament to the time and effort these young people have dedicated to raising the profile of youngsters in their situation.

Giving their time freely is admirable enough but they manage to combine this excellent work at the same time as caring for their families. Congratulations to all members of Young Carers Aloud.”

The Positive Social Behaviour Order Awards are hosted annually by Truth about Youth which is funded by The Co-operative Foundation and run in partnership with the Regional Youth Work Unit North East. The purpose of the awards is to challenge and change the widespread negative perceptions of young people.

Stockton Borough Council commissions Eastern Ravens Trust to provide its Young Carers Service.
