Couple plead with Darlington Borough Council to fix dilapidated house for the sake of their health

Darlington and Stockton Times: Pregnant Michelle Melles and disabled partner Michael Brown Pregnant Michelle Melles and disabled partner Michael Brown

A COUPLE are pleading with a council to fix their dilapidated house, for the sake of their health.

Heavily pregnant Michelle Melles and disabled partner Michael Brown moved into their Darlington council house in May and were assured repairs would be carried out.

Seven months later, they are still living in a damp house with broken fittings, bare wires, holes in the walls, no door handles, a fuse box that keeps tripping and a bowed ceiling.

A temperamental boiler and broken radiators mean the pair also face a harsh winter.

Asthmatic Ms Melles claims to have contracted pleurisy and pneumonia whilst living in the property while Mr Brown says his arthritis has been significantly worsened.

The couple have been informed by social services that their two-year-old son must continue staying with relatives until they are housed somewhere suitable for his needs.

Mr Brown believes repairs are not being done because the house – on Aviemore Court – is scheduled for demolition.

"I’m a builder so I know exactly what’s wrong but they won’t let me make the repairs.

“It’s like the house that Jack built. They’re not bothering because it’s scheduled for demolition but people still have to live here and it’s ridiculous.

“I’m angry and frustrated and they’re not listening. We’re trying to work with them but getting nowhere.”

Ms Melles added: “We bathe at our friend’s houses because the bathroom is so dangerous and the hot water is so expensive.

“We are struggling on a day-to-day basis and we just want them to do the repairs they promised.”

The couple are currently withholding their rent in protest but may face court action as a result.

A Darlington Borough Council spokeswoman said: “An officer visited the property on a number of occasions, however unfortunately there has been no answer.

“We are unable to comment on individual cases, however would encourage the tenant to call the housing team to arrange for an officer to visit the property to discuss what repairs are required and agree a suitable plan of the works.”

She added that public consultation events had been held concerning housing in the Red Hall Estate but to date, no decisions have been made and said the council will continue to fulfill their responsibilities as landlords.

Michelle Melles, 28, from Darlington, County Durham, was so desperate to impress her new boyfriend that she said she had been assaulted while trying to protect his daughter from a bully.
Melles, who is pregnant with her sixth child, was covered in purple 'bruises' on her hands and face and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Theres is no wrong in a couple having 5 or 6 children, just atleast plan and prepare for it,making sure you have stability, money and a healthy house to bring a child up in,list goes on,seems they have neither of these.
Unfair children being brought into it all, hope all the other children are in happy loving homes with stability and get the christmas and real life they deserve.

Going from other comments, this couple seem to be trying to raise money selling 'stories' to the papers.

I can't believe the council let the building with bare live wires.

The perverse thing is if you work hard and buy your own house you have to decorate it yourself find your own tradesman and pay for repairs then when you get old the council take it off you to pay for your care fees

if you never work you don't pay rent, you don't worry about repairs and when you get old all your care fees are taken care of

It's a strange life

Quite correct No Einstein, the council should not have let the property in its state. More importantly, it should net let to 'clients' of this kind. There wasa time when one needed to be respectable to be allowed to become a council tenant - alas those days are long gone - as are those of personal responsibility.

And why don't they move out? Because when the council knock those houses down they will compensate residents. Roumor has it close to £5, 000 per house hold. The bathroom in the picture is a newly fitted bathroom with was fitted at the same time as a brand new kichen and the house waa completely rewired at that point too. Also last yr these houses were fitted with new boilers and heating systems. So fellow council tax / hard working tax payers this is the kind of thing our money is being spent on. Whilst we pay for these two to live and we pay for their housing too. The council are ploughing thousands of pounds into houses they are already aware will be knocked down. And then to add insult to injury our council tax is going to line the pockets of people just like this. Oh and not to mention the children's services that WE pay for that work tirelessly to protect the offsring that what can only be described as a drain on society keeps spitting out! Ever get the feeling your on the wrong sideof tthe dole line?

The trouble is Maur1 that you can't make people work- they'll only contribute if they are so inclined.

I just feel that we shouldn't be so bothered about fire hosing benefits at these work-shy wasters.

I notice a total absence of the usual Leftiy commentators on this article (sineater/loonyleft/

I hope they read this as it is people like these that those of us who support benefit change believe should be "helped" to reduce their burden on society, I support adequate benefit payments to the genuinely needy but I have no time at all for those who wish to leech off society and want to complain whilst they are doing so! In fact, if people like this were removed from the benefit system then both the tax burden would be reduced and more funds would be available for the genuine needy.

Unfortunately there are many people like these and unless something is done about we are going to be overrun!

A picture says a thousand words. I've no problem with people who want to drop out of main stream society and seek an alternative lifestyle. We are a free country, live and let live. I do have a problem with those who expect the very main stream society they don't want to be part of to finance their lifestyle. They are hypocrites and the term 'benefit scroungers' is accurate and not an overstatement.

I think the 'two kids' child benefit cap suggestion has some mileage. When you bring a child into the world you have a responsibility for it into adult-hood. Not least to provide for it financially, but for everything else including being there for them no matter what, and providing a stable and loving home environment. Children are not commodities to be produced simply as a means of obtaining assistance from the State.

If you were a private landlord with a property to let, and this couple turned up to view it, what would your instinctive reaction be?

Hang on Jonn: In a previous post you said "you were only going to ask once". You've asked twice now. You're never consistent.

If I recall you have launched personal attacks on me before for being some kind of "right wing nutter". Still, I can assure you that whilst right of centre my politics are far less to the right than yours are to the left.

We'd all rather you commented on the current story- a couple who represent the work-shy fops who know how to play the system. It's these types I (and many others) resent, and not the genuine needy and disabled.

In the 70's, maybe 80's there was a programme on the box called "Give us a Clue" whereby you had to guess something, and it was either TV and/or Book, etc . So when I was ordered to remove a comment it was just a way of saying f*ck off. Jonn thinks I'm referring to him in the photograph but I'm actually referring to jonn (lower case j) but being a paranoid pleb he thinks it's him ;)

These are exactly the type of people that week in week out Sineater, Stocko, Jonn and mates state don't exist. They say that these are just a figment of imagination by a nasty, vindictive government.

But they do exist and even when the evidence is there they just ignor it and move to something trivial like the wind up above. It is truly pathetic!!!

Unfortunately it is people like this that give genuine benefit claimants a bad name. I work full time and have never been on benefits but I do support the Idea of them for people that are actually disabled.
I moved into my council property a couple of months ago and requested a light and hole in the ceiling be fixed this was done within a week of me moving in by contacting the council, arranging an appointment and making sure I was in at the arranged time. More than likely these to morons are probably incapable of this.

I don't mind people like him getting benefits after all if remploy hadn't closed he would still been there. genuine people shouldn't be classed the same of people not looking or wanting work. I was in the job centre few weeks ago a lad of around 20 yr old came in and said I need to sign on ive slept in ( this was nearly 2 pm.
