A RETIRED nurse who attended the world's first heart transplant operation during a career spanning 65 years has been honoured by colleagues on her 80th birthday.
British Red Cross volunteers described Baby Cox, of Northallerton, as inspirational, for her tireless work to help patients readjust to life at home after treatment in hospital.
Mrs Cox, whose patients include a 101-year-old from Brompton, said she had been thrilled by the plaudits she received from friends colleagues.
She was taken to Bettys in Northallerton for breakfast by businesswoman Sally Ann Reid before being given gifts and an ovation at the charity’s Christmas lunch at the Golden Lion in the town.
The Swaziland-born former Friarage Hospital nurse and carer at Beechwood Care Home, in Romanby, whose career included looking after 125 leprosy sufferers when she was aged 13, received the National Care Awards lifetime achievement accolade two years ago.
She said: “I am very grateful for my birthday gifts as the volunteering I do is what I live for, it is fantastic.”
Paula Morris, service coordinator for the charity, said: “We couldn’t do without Baby, she can’t say no and will take whatever comes going above and beyond what is needed.
