AN historic 18th century chandelier will be the main source of light at the candle-lit carol service at east Cleveland's almshouses this week.
While the 18th century altar window, depicting the nativity scene and restored a year ago at a cost of £34,000, will be specially illuminated for the occasion.
"It is very special and because of its age, we light the candles only once or twice each year," said Peter Sotheran, chair of the board of volunteer trustees who are responsible for the almshouses.
The singing will be led by the children of Green Gates School in Redcar. As part of the service, the school choir will sing three solo carols.
"They have been rehearsing for weeks to get it just right," said Helen Busby, the teacher who directs the choir.
The candle-lit service, based on the traditional service of nine lessons and carols takes place in the chapel of Sir William Turner's Almshouses at Kirkleatham near Redcar on Wednesday, December 11, beginning at 7pm.
The chapel will be open from 6.30pm to enable see the historic items on display inside.
Admission is free.
